Preparing Your Pool in August: Late-Summer Steps That Will Save Next Spring

Too often, we tend to view the aquatic year as two blocks: the euphoria of summer, followed by the chore of autumn. We enjoy the sunshine, the plants grow before our eyes, the fish gorge themselves, and we let things take their course. Then, one October morning, everything falls apart: leaves drop by the armful, the water becomes covered in blackish mud, sediment accumulates on the bottom, and panic sets in. We frantically pull out the nets in icy water.

As an ecologist and pioneer of natural aquariums, I can never say it often enough: seasons are not something to endure; they are something to anticipate.

The spring pond is prepared in August. Now, while the biological processes are still running at full capacity, is the time to act. By acting at the end of summer, you give your ecosystem time to organize itself gently. Here are the three biological pillars for successfully managing this transition and ensuring a magnificent pond after winter.

1. Rooting and thermal acclimatization of all the plants

The first end-of-summer priority concerns botany—not just the banks. Many hobbyists do not realize that anticipation applies to all the pond's plants, whether or not they have anchored roots.

The time for anchoring and transformation of oxygenating and floating plants

When you install marginal plants (such as the Sumpf-Schwertlilie, the Purple loosestrife or the Lobelia) in August, you benefit from water that is still warm and soil filled with summer energy. They therefore have time to establish themselves robustly in preparation for next spring. But do not forget your oxygenating and floating plants! By acting as early as August, their metabolism adapts gradually. 2. Autumn, a season of abundance for microfauna (the role of water lice)

Autumn is often associated with death and dormancy. That is a purely human perspective! In nature, autumn is, on the contrary, a season of absolute abundance.

As the summer growing season ends, an astronomical quantity of plant matter (mature leaves that detach, weakening stems, and withering algae) becomes available in the water. It is the great feast awaited by all detritivorous microfauna.

The awakening of water lice against sediment

This is the ideal time to introduce or strengthen your populations of aquatic water lice. These small crustaceans love this decomposing organic matter. By introducing them in August, you give them time to settle in comfortably and colonize the bottom of the pond before winter.

3. The return of green water and the army of daphnia

This is a familiar phenomenon to attentive observers: after the intense summer heat, the water in some ponds suddenly takes on a greenish tint in early autumn, a little like on the first day of spring.

Can you still plant in the pond in September?

Yes, it is still possible to plant in September, especially in regions with mild winters. However, August remains the ideal window because the soil and water retain maximum thermal inertia, immediately stimulating root growth. In September, temperatures drop more quickly, leaving the plant less time to establish itself firmly before the severe cold arrives.

Why does my water turn green again at the end of summer?

This is a classic natural cycle. The accumulation of summer debris releases nutrients into the water, and falling temperatures combined with abundant autumn sunlight cause a sudden surge of suspended microalgae (phytoplankton).
