Malaysian Trumpet Snail

The Malaysian trumpet snail, or “Malaysian,” is a discreet, elegant worker—the only snail that stirs the sand, to the great benefit of the aquarium.

This small snail with its pointed shell is probably the most discreet inhabitant of the aquarium.
Indeed, it spends the entire day buried in the substrate (sand or mud), emerging only after nightfall. The few individuals that stray out and can therefore be seen in broad daylight reveal nothing about the hundreds that are actually hidden!
Of course, the Malaysian trumpet snail can live perfectly well without a substrate to burrow into, in a bare-bottom aquarium. But it will then be unable to reproduce, or will reproduce with greater difficulty, since it lays its eggs in the substrate. Moreover, its reproduction has a rather rare characteristic among snails: individuals are either male or female, rather than hermaphroditic.
It breathes through gills and therefore does not need to come to the surface periodically to breathe, unlike ramshorn snails and bladder snails.
It is completely harmless to plants and all living organisms in your aquarium, since it feeds only on waste and dead tissue.
It is also highly sought after by enthusiasts of heavily planted aquariums, because its underground lifestyle means that it constantly stirs the substrate. This prevents pockets of fermentation or oxygen-free areas from developing there.
It is therefore an additional asset for the health of a natural aquarium.
Its only drawback is that it cannot tolerate the cold and therefore cannot spend the winter outdoors.
It can therefore only be kept in a tubarium or pond during the summer.
