Nano Moss (Amblystegium serpens): the infinitely small

Ultimate delicacy for your aquatic landscapes

If you found Java moss too coarse or invasive, you will love Nano Moss (Amblystegium serpens). As its name suggests, it is one of the finest and most delicate mosses available in the aquarium hobby.

Its tiny strands and soft green color create a striking sense of scale: in a small aquarium, it gives the illusion of a vast forest or a distant shrub. It is the ultimate “can’t-go-wrong” plant for nano tanks.

Why choose Nano Moss?

  • 📏 A perfect scale for nano aquariums: its leaves are so small that they make your aquarium appear larger than it really is. This is the aquascapers’ secret for adding depth to small volumes.
  • 🧲 A magnet for microfauna: its compact, dense structure is a true trap for “good things.” It retains particles and encourages the development of an abundant biofilm. Your water lice and young snails will spend their lives grazing on it.
  • ❄️ A cold-weather and pond champion: this is a very hardy native plant. It is not bothered by winter and will look magnificent in an outdoor pond, attached to stones or branches just at water level.
  • Strong attachment: unlike some mosses that constantly come loose, Nano Moss eventually anchors itself firmly to its support (rock or root) with its rhizoids, perfectly imitating nature.
  • 🌍 Versatile (aquatic and terrestrial): it grows equally well submerged, “in a soak” on a root emerging from the water, or even in a humid terrarium.

Planting and maintenance tips

  • Placement: this is an epiphytic plant. Do not bury it! Attach it to a root or stone with cotton thread or plant glue. Over time, it will attach itself.
  • Substrate and nutrition: it feeds through the water column. It does not need any specific substrate. It appreciates clear, circulating water to prevent sediment from smothering it.
  • Maintenance: it grows more slowly than Java moss, making it easier to manage. If it becomes too thick, simply trim it with scissors (turn off the flow while collecting the cut strands!).
  • Temperature: highly tolerant, it can withstand a broad range of 4 to 28°C.
  • Light: it tolerates low lighting, but will grow denser and more compact under medium lighting.

Possible uses

  • Nano cubes and shrimp tanks: essential for providing hiding places for juveniles (shrimp or fry) without obstructing the view thanks to its delicate structure.
  • Ponds and outdoors: ideal for planting pond edges, waterfall stones, or surface driftwood; it will withstand our winters perfectly.
  • Root hardscape covering: perfect for softening the contours of a spider root or simulating the foliage of a miniature tree in an aquatic landscape.
  • Wabi-Kusa and paludariums: it forms beautiful low carpets out of water, provided that very high humidity is maintained (water-saturated conditions).

FAQ - Nano Moss (Amblystegium serpens)

Is it the same as Java moss?

No, they are completely different! Nano Moss has much smaller leaves, slower growth, and a fresher light-green color than Java moss. It looks much “cleaner.”

Does it need CO2?

No, it grows very well without CO2. It will simply take its time, saving you from frequent gardening sessions.

Do fish eat it?

No, fish do not consume it. On the contrary, it is an excellent refuge for eggs and fry.

Why does it turn brown in the center?

If the cushion becomes too thick, light and water can no longer circulate underneath. Remember to thin it out or trim it regularly to keep it in top condition.
