Vallisneria gigantea: a tall, easy-care plant for natural aquariums, tub ponds, and ponds

A spectacular, oxygenating & very tall plant

Vallisneria gigantea is the giant of the Vallisnerias, with long ribbon-like leaves that quickly reach the surface. In an aquarium, it creates an elegant canopy. Outdoors, its ribbons may turn reddish in the sun and it may flower. Its rapid growth makes it an excellent oxygenating plant and a major consumer of nitrates and phosphates, ideal for balancing natural tanks as well as ponds and tub ponds.

Why choose Vallisneria gigantea?

  • Perfect plant curtain for the background or to hide certain areas.
  • Fast growth, resulting in strong oxygenation and water purification.
  • Very easy to care for, suitable for low-tech tanks (no CO₂ required).
  • Hard-water tolerant: grows well with tap water.
  • Propagates by runners, forming dense, long-lasting clumps.
  • Ribbon-like leaves that may turn reddish near the surface. May flower outdoors.

Planting and cultivation tips

  • Placement: background and sides of the tank to add height and hide unattractive areas.
  • Substrate: provide at least 5 cm of soil (sand or gravel) to anchor the plants.
  • Lighting: medium to high. Trim ribbons that provide too much shade (trimming also slows growth).
  • Parameters: medium-hard to hard water; no particular requirements. CO₂ is completely unnecessary.
  • Outdoors: hardy but sensitive to frost. Overwintering is possible only in a deep pond, where the base will remain frost-free. Perfect for a summer tub pond.

Possible uses

  • Low-tech aquarium: large background plant that stabilizes the ecosystem through its vigorous growth and the longevity of its leaves, which provide support for biofilm and periphyton.
  • Large aquariums and community tanks: graphic vertical lines, shelter for shy fish.
  • Summer tub pond / planted pond (if sufficiently deep).
