Cryptocoryne becketti: easy and robust plant for natural aquarium

An ideal Cryptocoryne for low-tech

Cryptocoryne becketti is a mid and foreground plant known for its simplicity: it tolerates low light, hard water, and a simple substrate. After an acclimation phase, it forms pretty bouquets about 15 cm tall, with lanceolate leaves green on top and reddish underneath, perfect for a natural and calming look in an aquarium without costly technology.

It is probably the easiest of the Cryptos, and the only care it asks for... is to be left alone!

Why choose Cryptocoryne becketti?

  • Without CO2: grows very well in low-tech aquarium, in simple sand.
  • Tolerant: soft or hard water, it adapts.
  • Low lighting accepted. It prefers soft light.
  • Spreads slowly by stolons and clumps can be separated.
  • Stable once established (then avoid moving it).
  • Aesthetic: green and brown-red contrast depending on conditions.

Planting and cultivation tips

  • Placement: mid/foreground, sheltered from too intense light.
  • Substrate: sand/gravel is sufficient. Gradual rooting and clump expansion.
  • Light: low to medium (avoid too strong intensity at first).
  • Maintenance: let it settle. Trim old leaves. Let the stolons run to thicken the mass. It likes to be left alone!
  • Parameters: room temperature (20–22 °C) possible. No particular requirements for pH or hardness.

Possible uses

  • Low-tech aquarium: natural mass, low maintenance, manages on its own.
  • Aquascaping: its deep green contrasts with light greens and reds.
  • Paludarium (emerged): perfectly possible, but its ideal playground remains the aquarium.

FAQ - Cryptocoryne becketti

Is CO2 needed?

No. It grows very well without it, in a balanced and calm tank.

What size does it reach?

About 15 cm under common conditions. Then it thickens.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Perfectly: it is one of the easiest crypts to maintain.

Why does it "melt" after planting?

This is the classic "crypt melt": it replaces its old leaves. Let it regrow in its own way from the base.

Can it be moved often?

Better to avoid: it prefers stability once rooted. It is a homebody.
