elodea, an easy plant with countless virtues: hyper-oxygenating, a fierce opponent of algae, an antibiotic factory. And so fast-growing!
The first quality of elodea is its title as the most oxygenating plant in freshwater environments.
It must be recognized that its leaves of a deep green are particularly dense (hence its Latin name) and do not waste a single ray of light. All the light is utilized, whether weak or strong. Nothing is lost! Photosynthesis is therefore at its maximum and it releases so much oxygen into the water that we see it "bubbling" constantly!
"It is one of the few plants that can use light at all depths, from the surface to the bottom. A deep pond does not scare it. In fact, it is its oxygenating properties that often save the ponds that contain it when a heatwave threatens to deprive the water of oxygen. Many fish, in hot years, owe their survival to it!"
Like the Hornwort, it can be anchored in the substrate, but it also thrives well unplanted, left to its own devices in the water column. Unlike the cerato, it will send out some white roots towards the bottom, which will give your aquarium a jungle-like aquatic feel!
What is less known, as it was discovered recently, is that it seems to emit molecules with antibiotic properties. This would explain its anti-cyanobacteria action, which until now was known but mysterious.
Its rapid growth, if temperature and light facilitate it, also undermines algae, as it leaves them nothing to eat! It cleans the water by consuming nitrates and phosphates, leaving only crumbs for the algae, which thus find themselves terribly outcompeted.
The density of its foliage is very important to serve as a refuge for fry and microfauna. Its clusters are much more impenetrable than those of the ceratophyllum or the Najas.
"Its buds have a strong tendency to break. This is perfectly normal and natural: this is indeed how elodea multiplies, with each fragment becoming a cutting that grows into a whole new plant a little further away."
This does not prevent elodea from blooming: in the beautiful season, one can admire its pretty white flowers above the surface forming a carpet over the emerging clusters.
elodea accepts all temperatures below 30°C, and perfectly withstands winter in ponds, patiently waiting without any problem under the ice.
A single strand of elodea can easily exceed one meter in length if left to grow, for example in a pond.
Each batch contains 3 plants.
Our plants are guaranteed bare root, without rock wool, or any artificial substrate, ready to adapt to their new environment.
Although they are not classified as invasive plants, I ask you not to spread these plants in nature.
