Dao noï (Pogostemon helferi): original lawn-like plant for aquariums
A lawn-like, compact, and bright plant
Pogostemon helferi, nicknamed Dao noï in Thai ("little star"), forms curly rosettes at ground level. Ideal for creating an original lawn of a very bright tender green in the foreground, it loves light and stays very short when it gets enough. Perfect in nano-aquariums and for shrimp that shelter there and graze on microfilms and micro-algae on its leaves. Water lice and fry develop sheltered under its cover.
Amphibious, it also grows emergent (paludarium or terrarium) and can even flower out of water.
Why choose Dao noï?
- Dense, low (3–5 cm) lawn-like carpet under strong light.
- Unique silhouette: curly rosettes, rare "star" effect.
- Low-tech compatible: no CO₂ required if strong light and clear water.
- Easy propagation by division and lateral spreading of the plants.
- Ideal for nanos and shrimp (small size, ground-level refuges).
- Adapts to emergent culture (paludarium) and summer outdoor culture.
Planting and cultivation tips
- Plant in small clumps spaced a few cm apart so they join together.
- Strong light essential to stay low (limit dense floating plants that cast too much shade).
- Simple substrate (fine sand/gravel), fresh to moderately hard water.
- Optional CO₂: often used to speed up thickening, but not essential.
- Maintenance: divide and replant the rosettes at the edges to extend the carpet.
- Outdoors: only in summer (tender plant). Protect from herbivorous fish (carp, goldfish) that nibble its tender leaves.
Possible uses
- Low-tech aquarium: bright foreground.
- Nano aquarium: short lawn, refuge for juveniles, ideal size.
- Paludarium / humid terrarium: emergent growth in humid atmosphere, possible flowering.
- Mini summer pond or basin: shallow and bright areas out of reach of herbivorous fish.
FAQ - Dao noï (Pogostemon helferi)
No. It is optional: light is the key factor.
About 3 to 5 cm with sufficient light.
Strong light, spaced tufts at the start, regular divisions and limitation of shade.
Lack of light (or shading by other plants, often floating). Increase lighting.
Yes, it is even one of its best uses (refuge, grazing on biofilm).
Additional information
- Scientific name: Pogostemon helferi
- Plant type: compact aquatic lawn plant
- Light: strong, avoid any shading (large plants above, or floating plants too dense)
- Ideal temperature: 20 to 28°C. It is therefore an aquarium or paludarium plant.
- Size: 3 to 5 cm. Stronger light keeps the plant shorter.
- Packaging: 3 plants (indicative weight: 12 g).
- Guarantee: without rock wool or any artificial substrate of any kind.
- Recommendation: as a precautionary principle, please never release this plant into the wild. It is not native to our regions, should normally not naturalize, but we must preserve our ecosystems.
