The melanoid, or "Malaysian", is a discreet, elegant worker, the only snail that stirs the sand for the greater good of the aquarium.
This little snail with a pointed shell is probably the most discreet inhabitant of the aquarium.
Indeed, it spends the whole day buried in the substrate (sand or mud), only coming out at nightfall. The few individuals that are seen during the day say nothing of the hundreds that are actually hidden!
Of course, the melanoid can perfectly live without a substrate to burrow into, in an aquarium with a bare bottom. But it will then be unable to reproduce, or it will be more difficult, since it lays its eggs in the substrate. Moreover, its reproduction has a rather rare characteristic among snails, as individuals are either male or female and not hermaphrodites.
"It breathes with gills, and therefore does not need to come periodically to the surface to breathe, unlike the ramshorn snails and the bladder snails."
"It is absolutely harmless to plants and to all living organisms in your aquarium, as it only feeds on waste and dead tissue."
"It is also highly sought after by enthusiasts of heavily planted aquariums, as its underground lifestyle constantly stirs the substrate. This prevents pockets of fermentation or areas without oxygen from developing."
It is therefore one more element for the health of a natural aquarium.
His only flaw is that he cannot stand the cold and therefore will not be able to spend the winter outdoors.
"Its place in a trash can or in a basin can therefore only be conceived in summer."
