Water milfoil crisped (Myriophyllum crispatum): oxygenating and decorative plant for ponds

A graphic amphibious plant that "crawls then shoots up"

Water milfoil crisped is at ease in ponds or pools: its stems crawl on the bottom, root, then shoot up to the surface to form very decorative "miniature fir trees." Underwater, its fine and feathery foliage oxygenates and purifies. Above, its upright stems structure the surface and add volume. Ideal to complexify the ecosystem and offer safe shelters to microfauna, water lice love to take refuge there.

Why choose Water milfoil crisped?

  • Oxygenating and purifying: captures nitrates and phosphates, competes with algae through continuous growth.
  • Remarkable silhouette: "forest" of very decorative upright stems, like water milfoil, but with a different texture and color.
  • Habitat for microfauna and fry (crawling stems and dense rootlets) which find shelter and food there.
  • Hardy: the emerged parts disappear in winter. Vigorous regrowth in spring.
  • Simple maintenance: easy pruning and cuttings, it is not very invasive.
  • Low-tech friendly in large aquariums (but much more comfortable in ponds).

Planting and cultivation tips

  • Ponds and pools: plant in shallow areas. Let the stems crawl then emerge.
  • Light: medium to strong (intensity promotes compactness and vigor).
  • Water: clear, moderate current; suitable for natural tanks and poubellariums.
  • Size: cut overly long stems. Replant the segments (respecting their orientation).
  • Association: superb with water milfoil (Hippuris vulgaris) for a contrast of color and texture, their shapes being similar.
  • Winter: outdoors, the submerged stems enter dormancy. The base regrows even more vigorously in spring.
  • Soil: the presence of a substrate is appreciated, whether simple sand or clay, it will anchor there.

Possible uses of Water milfoil crisped

  • Natural pond / pond: plant decoration, oxygenation, purification, protective seagrass bed.
  • Trashcan aquarium: rapid growth in season and pretty emerged stems.
  • Large low-tech aquarium: mass in the background (ideal in open tank).

FAQ - Water milfoil crisped

Is it effective against algae?

Yes: rapid growth, nutrient consumption, and therefore strong pressure on algae.

Is CO2 needed?

No, it is absolutely unnecessary. It grows very well without it, especially in a well-sunned pond.

How to propagate it?

By simple cuttings: cut a stem section and replant it. The base will send out new stems, and the cutting will form its own roots.

Does it risk invading the pond?

It can spread without invading; control it with one or two annual trimmings and thinning if necessary.

Does it survive the winter?

Yes. The emerged parts disappear, but the submerged stems/growth points overwinter, then regrow in spring.
