Water hyssop (Bacopa monnieri): medicinal and purifying plant for aquariums and natural ponds

A bank plant with dual use: ornamental & edible

Water hyssop (Bacopa monnieri), also known as "brâhmi" in Ayurvedic tradition, is a versatile semi-aquatic plant. Its thick, light green leaves arranged along creeping or upright stems offer a beautiful ornamental appearance and are edible, rich in antioxidants. It produces abundant small white to bluish flowers and can be grown both in wet areas and aquatic environments.

Why include Water Hyssop in a natural pond or low-tech aquarium?

  • Purifying plant: effectively absorbs nitrates and phosphates through its rapid growth.
  • Aesthetic: forms a decorative and flowering plant carpet on banks or when emerging from the surface.
  • Comfortable both underwater and out of water. Even without water, in well-moist soil!
  • Versatile: suitable for aquariums, ponds, poubellariums, and garden wetlands.
  • Edible and usable in medicinal gardens or aquatic vegetable gardens.

Planting and cultivation tips

  • 🌱 Plant at the edge of a pond, up to 40 to 50 cm deep, or in waterlogged soil.
  • 💧 Can be fully submerged, but seeing it emerge above the surface is beautiful.
  • 🌞 Tolerates full sun as well as partial shade.
  • ❄️ Hardiness: down to -5 to -10 °C depending on protection and conditions. We have been hardening our stock for years, and if the base does not freeze underwater, it withstands all winters.
  • ✂️ Creeping growth ideal for stabilizing banks and quickly populating a trash pond or aquarium. But you can also trim the stems and replant the cut parts.

Possible garden uses

  • Natural pond: oxygenating plant (underwater) and decorative with its flowers.
  • Aquaponic tank: perfectly suited to grow roots in water and stems above water.
  • Marshy area: natural ground cover.
  • Medicinal or edible garden: fresh leaves are edible.
  • In a pot or planter: simply water it often.
