Vallisneria gigantea: tall and easy plant for natural aquarium, trashcan aquarium, and pond
A spectacular, oxygenating & very tall plant
Vallisneria gigantea is the giant of Vallisnerias, with long ribbon-like leaves that quickly reach the surface. In aquariums, it creates an elegant canopy. Outdoors, its ribbons can turn red in the sun and allow flowering. Its rapid growth makes it an excellent oxygenating plant and a heavy consumer of nitrates and phosphates, ideal for the balance of natural tanks, as well as ponds and trashcan aquariums.
Why choose Vallisneria gigantea?
- Perfect plant curtain for the background or to hide certain areas.
- Fast growth, thus strong oxygenation and water purification.
- Very easy, suitable for low-tech tanks (no CO₂ required).
- Tolerant of hard water: grows well with tap water.
- Propagates by stolons, forming dense and lasting clumps.
- Ribbon leaves that can turn red near the surface. Flowering possible outdoors.
Planting and cultivation tips
- Placement: background and sides of the tank to structure height and hide unsightly areas.
- Substrate: provide at least 5 cm of soil (sand or gravel) to anchor the plants.
- Light: medium to strong. Trim ribbons that shade too much (pruning also slows growth).
- Parameters: medium to hard water, no special requirements. CO₂ completely unnecessary.
- Outdoors: hardy plant but sensitive to frost. Overwintering possible only in a deep pond where the base remains frost-free. Perfect for summer trashcan aquariums.
Possible uses
- Low-tech aquarium: large background plant, stabilizes the ecosystem through vigorous growth and the longevity of its leaves which support biofilm and periphyton.
- Large aquariums and community tanks: graphic vertical lines, shelter for shy fish.
- Trashcan aquarium (summer) / planted pond (if deep enough).
