Tubifex: food suitable for bottom-dwelling and midwater fish
What are tubifex?
Tubifex (Tubifex tubifex) are slender, red, segmented worms, 1 to 4 cm long, that naturally live buried in mud. Their protein-rich bodies (about 60%) and essential amino acids make them highly nutritious prey. Unlike wild tubifex, which are often contaminated, our worms are raised in a controlled system, not collected from the wild, then packed in bags of about 30 individuals on the day they are shipped.
Why choose live tubifex?
- 👍 High nutritional value: promotes growth, reproduction, and coloration.
- 🐠 Natural behavior: encourages corydoras, loaches, and even bettas to search and inspect the substrate where the worms hide.
- 🥇 Nutritionally superior to frozen or freeze-dried tubifex. No added salt.
- 📏 Thinner than Blackworm, it may be suitable for smaller fish.
- 🌍 Contributes to biodiversity in a fish-free aquarium dedicated to plants and invertebrates.
Who are tubifex for?
- Bottom-dwelling fish: corydoras, ancistrus, loaches.
- Carnivorous or omnivorous fish: bettas, barbs, gouramis, livebearers.
- Growing juvenile fish, and preparing pairs for breeding.
- Low-tech tanks without fish: they help maintain the overall balance, and watching them is fascinating.
Instructions for use
- Since tubifex make the water very dirty, you can discard the water in the shipping bag.
- Distribute the worms vertically above the places where you want them to fall, as tubifex do not swim.
- Feed small portions to prevent your fish from eating everything at once!
- Storage: one week in a cool place (8-12 °C) in clean, slightly oxygenated water, changing the water regularly.
Good to know
According to scientists, tubifex can survive in heavily polluted water with almost no oxygen. But in a natural aquarium, it's best to keep them in clean tanks, with substrate for burrowing and effective oxygenation.
FAQ - Tubifex for aquariums or ponds
No. Our worms are raised cleanly, without sludge or pathogenic bacteria. They are never collected from the wild.
It isn't essential, but a quick rinse with clean water reassures some aquarium hobbyists. In reality, you just need to discard their transport water, which is often dirty.
When fish are present, they are quickly eaten. Without predators, they can burrow for a few days and then settle in. They are therefore well suited to a natural aquarium without fish, dedicated to plants and various invertebrates.
Live food is more nutritious and stimulates natural hunting behavior. In the wild, fish always prefer live prey.
Up to eight days in the refrigerator, in a container of clean water with slight aeration.
