(35 ml pouch)
Concentrated live phytoplankton: natural food for daphnia, ostracods, and microfauna
What is it?
A 35 ml pouch of live freshwater phytoplankton (suspended microalgae), concentrated for dilution to recreate several liters of nutritious "green water."
Ideal for feeding daphnia, ostracods, and filter-feeding microfauna, and therefore for starting or boosting your cultures.
Why choose this live phytoplankton?
- Natural and alive: the universal food base for culturing small organisms. Phytoplankton is the foundation of all aquatic food chains.
- Ultra-simple: one 35 ml dose produces 2 to 5 liters of plankton in just a few seconds.
- Effective: faster growth of daphnia or ostracods and greater culture stability.
- Algal biodiversity: diverse green water made up of various species grown naturally, rather than laboratory clones.
- Economical: one dose is enough to start and maintain a small culture. You can also keep some aside to grow yourself.
Quick instructions
- 🚰 Preparation: Pour the pouch into a container of tap water (several liters, depending on your needs). If you prepared the water the day before or use water from your aquarium, even better.
- ☀️ Light: Expose it to light (ideally indirect sunlight) so the microalgae can continue developing. Ideally, provide between 12 and 16 hours per day.
- 🍽️ Distribution: Add it regularly to your daphnia and ostracod culture tanks. Daphnia eat it while it is suspended in the water, while ostracods wait for some of it to settle on the bottom.
- 🔄 Maintenance: Add water to the culture to compensate for consumption, and return it to the light. A drop of liquid fertilizer can help if you are not using water from an aquarium.
- 💡 Tip: "Green water" is undesirable in a display aquarium (because it is unattractive), but valuable for feeding your aquatic organism cultures.
Recommended uses
- Daphnia culture: (bucket, outdoor tank, mini pond...). They constantly filter suspended microalgae from the water to feed on them.
- Ostracods and microfauna: they feed on it when it settles on surfaces. This slow sedimentation covers surfaces with a green film that the microfauna “grazes” on.
- Pond or mini pond: occasional supplementation to support food cultures when the water is too clear or during winter.
FAQ – Live phytoplankton
A concentrated, dilutable blend of live freshwater microalgae (phytoplankton).
One 35 ml pouch can recreate several liters of nutritious plankton-rich water.
Yes, provided you dilute it. You can also pour a small amount directly into the daphnia tank, where it will dilute on its own.
Use it primarily for dedicated cultures. If you have fish, there is generally no microfauna to feed. And if you do not, you may prefer to keep your water clear for the aquarium's appearance.
Keep the culture in the light and top it up with fresh water if needed; the green coloration indicates good density. If you use pure tap water, you can feed it with a drop of liquid fertilizer.
Additional information
- Type: diverse, natural, live plant-based plankton.
- Size: microscopic algae suspended in the water, invisible to the naked eye.
- Use: natural food for daphnia, ostracods, and microfauna.
- Temperature: the optimum temperature for cultivating phytoplankton is around 18°C, but light is more important (12 to 16 hours per day if possible).
- Packaging: watertight double-sealed 35 ml pouch of plankton, harvested and packaged the morning of shipment (indicative weight: 40g).
- Guarantee: plankton cultivated under 100% natural conditions, without added chemical fertilizers or treatment products.
- Recommendation: an air stone in your culture will help the plankton remain suspended in the water longer and therefore settle more slowly.
