Alder cones: natural tannins and protection for freshwater aquariums

What is it?

Alder cones are small cones rich in humins, humic acids, and tannins. Placed in the aquarium, they gently acidify the water, give it a very natural amber tint, and create a healthier environment, similar to Amazonian biotopes for example. Their scales also serve as refuge for microorganisms, fry, and very young shrimp. In botany, these cones are called "strobiles."

Why use alder cones in a natural aquarium?

  • Protective tannins: help limit pathogenic fungi and bacteria (protection of eggs and spawn).
  • Natural conditioner: gentle acidification and controlled amber water.
  • Well-being of sensitive shrimp and fish (killifish, etc.). Protective during periods of immune fragility such as acclimation.
  • Natural look: decorative cones, "blackwater" type biotope.
  • Simplicity: ready to use, no boiling or washing required.

Who are alder cones intended for?

  • Low-tech / natural aquarists seeking tannin-rich and amber water, naturally protective.
  • Shrimp breeders (Neocaridina, Caridina) and fish sensitive to tannins.
  • Community tanks wanting a natural conditioner.
  • Educational projects: tannin cycles, biotopes, observation of spawn.

Introduction & usage tips

  • Starting dosage: 1 cone for about 10 liters, including in ponds (adjust according to the desired effect).
  • Renewal: about every 4 weeks. Leave the old cones (refuge and natural decoration).
  • Instructions: place directly in the aquarium. Do not wash or boil (loss of tannins).
  • Capacity: 50 cones cover 100 liters for about 5 months with average use.

FAQ - Alder cones

Does it color the water a lot?

Light amber coloration, less dark than with peat. Varies with dose and time.

Difference with catappa?

Similar effects (tannins), but often a gentler and more regular release with the cones. Natural degradation is also much slower.

Compatible with shrimp and delicate fish?

Yes, and even recommended for general well-being and successful spawning. The released tannins limit fungal and bacterial attacks.

Can they be boiled or rinsed?

Not recommended: you would remove some of the active compounds, which would be a shame!

How long are they effective?

About 3–4 weeks. Then the release of tannins gradually decreases. Replace or add regularly to maintain the effect (as in nature!).
