Concentrated live phytoplankton: natural food for daphnia, ostracods, and microfauna

What is it?

A 35 ml sachet of concentrated live freshwater phytoplankton (microalgae in suspension) to dilute and reconstitute several liters of nutritious "green water."

Ideal for feeding daphnia, ostracods, and filter-feeding microfauna, perfect to start or boost your cultures.

Why choose this live phytoplankton?

  • Natural and live: universal food base for breeding small creatures. Phytoplankton is the foundation of all aquatic food chains.
  • Ultra-simple: one 35 ml dose produces 2 to 5 liters of plankton in seconds.
  • Effective: faster growth of daphnia or ostracods, better culture stability.
  • Algal biodiversity: diverse green water made up of various species in natural culture, not lab-cloned.
  • Economical: one dose is enough to start and maintain a small culture. And you can keep some to cultivate yourself.

Quick instructions

  • 🚰 Preparation: Pour the sachet into a container of tap water (several liters depending on your needs). If you prepared this water the day before or use aquarium water, even better.
  • ☀️ Light: Expose to light (ideally indirect sunlight) so the microalgae continue to develop. Ideally between 12:00 and 16:00 hours per day.
  • 🍽️ Feeding: Distribute regularly into your daphnia and ostracod breeding tanks. Daphnia eat it suspended in the water, ostracods wait for some to settle at the bottom.
  • 🔄 Maintenance: Add water to the culture to compensate for consumption and return it to the light. A drop of liquid fertilizer can help if you don’t use aquarium water.
  • 💡 Tip: "Green water" is undesirable in a display aquarium (because it looks unattractive) but valuable for feeding your aquatic creature cultures.

Recommended uses

  • Daphnia breeding: (bucket, outdoor tank, trashcan pond...). They continuously filter microalgae in suspension to feed.
  • Ostracods and microfauna: feed on it when it settles on surfaces. This slow sedimentation covers supports with a green felt that the microfauna "grazes" on.
  • Pond or mini-pond: occasional addition to support food cultures when their water is too clear or during winter.

FAQ – Live phytoplankton

What does the sachet contain?

A live concentrated mix of freshwater microalgae (phytoplankton) to dilute.

How much volume does it produce?

One 35 ml sachet can reconstitute several liters of nutritious planktonic water.

Is it ready to use?

Yes, provided you dilute it. But you can also pour a small amount directly into the daphnia tank, where it will dilute itself.

Can it be used in the main aquarium?

Use it mainly for dedicated cultures. If you have fish, there is usually no microfauna to feed. And if you don’t, you might prefer to keep your water clear for aquarium aesthetics.

How to keep it active?

Keep the culture in the light, top up with fresh water if needed; the green color indicates good density. If you use pure tap water, you can feed it with a drop of liquid fertilizer.

Additional information

  • Type: diverse natural live plant plankton.
  • Size: microscopic algae in suspension, invisible to the naked eye.
  • Use: natural food for daphnia, ostracods, and microfauna.
  • Temperature: optimum for cultivating phytoplankton is around 18°C, but light is more important (12 to 16 hours per day if possible).
  • Packaging: 35 ml double-sealed airtight sachet of plankton, harvested and packaged the morning of shipment (approximate weight: 40g).
  • Guarantee: plankton cultivated under 100% natural conditions, without added chemical fertilizers or treatment products.
  • Recommendation: an air stone in your culture will help plankton stay suspended longer in the water and settle less quickly.
