Vallisneria gigantea: tall, easy-care plant for natural aquariums, outdoor tubs, and ponds
A spectacular, oxygenating, very tall plant
Vallisneria gigantea is the giant among Vallisneria species, with long ribbon-like leaves that quickly reach the surface. In an aquarium, it creates an elegant canopy. Outdoors, its ribbons can turn red in the sun and it may flower. Its rapid growth makes it an excellent oxygenating plant and a major consumer of nitrates and phosphates, ideal for maintaining the balance of natural aquariums, as well as ponds and outdoor tubs.
Why choose Vallisneria gigantea?
- A perfect green backdrop for the rear of the aquarium or to hide certain areas.
- Fast-growing, providing abundant oxygen and helping purify the water.
- Very easy to grow and suitable for low-tech tanks (no CO₂ required).
- Tolerates hard water: grows well in tap water.
- Spreads by runners, forming dense, long-lasting clumps.
- Ribbon-like leaves can turn red near the surface. May flower outdoors.
Planting and care tips
- Placement: at the back and along the sides of the tank to add height and hide unsightly areas.
- Substrate: use at least 5 cm of soil (sand or gravel) to anchor the roots.
- Lighting: medium to high. Trim ribbons that create too much shade (trimming also slows growth).
- Water conditions: medium-hard to hard water; no special requirements. CO₂ is entirely unnecessary.
- Outdoors: a hardy plant, but frost-sensitive. It can overwinter only in a deep pond, where its base will remain frost-free. Perfect for outdoor tubs in summer.
Possible uses
- Low-tech aquarium: a large background plant that stabilizes the ecosystem through vigorous growth and long-lasting leaves that provide a surface for biofilm and periphyton.
- Large aquariums and community tanks: graphic vertical lines and shelter for shy fish.
- Outdoor tub in summer / planted pond (if sufficiently deep).
