The phenomenon of fishless aquariums
F. MattierThe concept of fishless aquariums would have seemed quite strange, and even paradoxical, just a few years ago.
But more and more enthusiasts are now turning to this passion.
Of course, awareness of animal welfare plays a role in this evolution.
There is also a critique of the fish trade, the ethics of which can be questioned: imported fish with inevitable mortality during transport, poorly regulated farms set up in Eastern Europe, or worse, the harvesting of wild fish from the natural environment, additional mortality at points of sale...
But many aquarists also discover, over the years, the charm of fishless aquariums.
'The absence of fish is often the condition for establishing a true stable aquatic ecosystem. Where, in nature, there is generally less than one fish per cubic meter of water (1000 liters!), the density in an aquarium is much higher and changes everything. Our fish spend their days inspecting every square centimeter of their aquarium, making it impossible for micro-fauna to establish. The biological cycle is therefore disrupted by the omnipresence of these little hungry predators!'
Without fish, it becomes possible to focus on microfauna and plants, which together establish a complete and stable cycle. The critters (daphnia, worms, hydras, water lice, ostracods, etc.) feed on bacteria and waste, their droppings nourish the plants, whose dead leaves will feed the bacteria, and the cycle is complete...
The closed circuit is practically possible.
You then have an aquarium without chores! No need for a filter or aerator, heating is generally unnecessary, no fish to feed, plants grow on their own thanks to the light, and the critters proliferate at their own pace.

One meditates silently and serenely there, the spectacle changes according to the growth of this or that plant, and the magnifying glass placed nearby allows one to indulge in the fascinating life of the little creatures that live there. The jerky swimming of daphnia, the hypnotic dance of Blackworm, the water lice forming their couples, the gatherings of ostracods on the slightest dead leaf...
No need for a large volume, in which a fish will always seem captive: sixty liters is an immense world for such a small water louse, and even more for a stationary plant!
Plants produce the oxygen that insects breathe, then consume the CO2 they exhale, to make oxygen again. The loop is complete.
The light is the only engine of this small silent world, independent of you for the most part.
And so exemplary for teaching children what nature is!

C’est bien l’aquariophilie avec rien. Je viens de lâcher deux feuilles de chêne dans le 17 litres en verre moulé. C’est joli. Beau rapport de couleurs avec les têtes illuminées (un peu comme la mienne) d’Elodées de Nuttall trouvées en Bretagne.
J’ai ré-abordé l’aquariophilie de manière très technique il y a 6/8ans (alors que je faisais ça de manière totalement chaotique étant gamin) avec une ferti, sol tech, co2, routine de maintenance…
Aujourd’hui, mes bacs sont pas des plus “aquascapés” du monde, mais ils restent sans doute assez appréciables & surtout je m’approche du plus possible du lowtech.
Pour cela, je réquisitionne l’aide de supers auxiliaires (que j’ai pris ici pour certains) ostracodes, aselles etc qui nous aident quotidienne au maintient du bac.
Pas de renouvellement (hormis évaporation à l’eau osmosée), les seuls test que je m’inflige c’est l’évolution du GH & phosphates, les nitrates étant toujours en déficit dans un aquarium décemment planté. Si besoin, je reminéralise une fois tous les 6 mois, je fais un petit renouvellement en cas de phosphates trop hauts.
Les bacs sont juste convenablement brassés & filtrés pour m’éviter une corvée de nettoyage du sol.
Si vous souhaitez faire une aquariophilie peu contraignante, renseignez vous du côté du lowtech – notech – walstad etc.

cela fait quelques années que je désespérais de trouver un endroit où on évoque et où on met en avant notre biodiversité locale.
Je possède plusieurs aquariums, un bassin et je peux passer des heures à observer l’évolution de chacun.
Enfin un article et un site qui vont me permettre d’aller encore plus loin et de corriger un certain nombre d’erreurs.
Je réserve un aquarium pour toutes ces petites bestioles, je vais pouvoir en prendre plein les yeux !

Bel article qui me conforte vers quoi je tends. Préservation du bien-être animal mais aussi, et je l’avoue, un brun de fainéantise. Deux de mes 8 aquariums n’ont déjà plus aucun poisson, l’un est converti en terrarium avec cloportes “Porcellio laevis orange” et l’autre de 30l peuplé de gammares, planaires et d’autres bestioles qui arrivent de je ne sais où.
Mes poubellariums me fascinent durant toutes la belle saison.

C’est effectivement une autre aquariophilie tout aussi passionnante.
Assurément, dès que la place se libérera, j’y viendrai ne serait-ce qu’en souvenir des heures passées enfant le nez dans un ruisseau.
