Marsh Isnardia (Ludwigia palustris): a red and easy plant for aquarium and pond
A creeping, oxygenating, and hassle-free plant
Marsh Isnardia is an extremely adaptable amphibious plant: it grows in calm water as well as in waterlogged soil, out of water, and thrives equally well in aquariums and ponds. Its thin, branched stems root easily, and its leaves change from green to red depending on the light. Outdoors, it forms dense cushions, true impenetrable meadows that serve as shelter for microfauna, tadpoles, and small fish.
Why choose Marsh Isnardia?
- Color changes: all shades from green to coppery red depending on the light.
- Oxygenating and purifying: helps limit algae thanks to its rapid growth that ruthlessly competes with them.
- Undemanding: parameters are practically indifferent, compatible with low-tech setups.
- Easy propagation: simple cuttings (tips or segments). Lay a stem down and it will root along its entire length and form new stems!
- Pond and pool: its dense cushions are a safe refuge for wildlife: water lice, fry, snails...
- Strong stems: do not fragment spontaneously, do not break on impact; therefore, it is easier to manage and does not spread uncontrollably.
Planting and care tips
- Light: medium to strong for very pronounced red tones.
- Substrate: sand or gravel is sufficient. It roots quickly and easily.
- Parameters: soft to moderately hard water. Adding CO2 is completely unnecessary.
- Pruning: cut above a node and replant the tip. The base will sprout and the cutting will grow.
- Pond: install in calm areas. Thin out if the cushion becomes too dense or too wide for your taste. Plant it, for example, at the base of larger plants, like Sumpf-Schwertlilie or Purple loosestrife.
Possible uses of the Sumpf-Schwertlilie
- Low-tech aquarium: colorful mass in midground or background. It can emerge in an open aquarium.
- Aquascaping: contrasting and exuberant red plant, creeping ground cover.
- Pond and pool: refuge cushions for fry, tadpoles, or water lice. Perfect for hiding the liner and covering edges.
FAQ - Sumpf-Schwertlilie (Ludwigia palustris)
Yes, very well, without CO2 or filter, just good light.
Increase lighting. Optionally add a little iron unless there are fish, especially if they are fed live food. In that case, no deficiency occurs because iron comes through this route.
Yes. Regular and significant growth, dense cushions, and a refuge role for fauna and microfauna. It withstands winter and regrows in spring.
Fast, especially if the light is strong. It rarely stagnates; it’s more of a champion!
Perfectly. One of the easiest plants, it is tolerant and very decorative.
