Marsh Littorella (Littorella uniflora): foreground lawn plant in aquariums and bank plant in ponds
A European, amphibious, and perennial lawn plant
The marsh Littorella forms very dense lawns of 3 to 4 cm (up to 10 cm maximum) and lives both submerged and emerged. In aquariums, it creates a rare and very natural short carpet. In ponds, it stabilizes banks and regrows each spring from its underground parts.
This species is protected because it is threatened: never collected from the wild. Its dark green is rare among lawn plants.
Why choose Littorella?
- Fully amphibious: aquarium, trash terrarium, pond and wet bank.
- Natural "lawn" effect, very short in the foreground. A dark green color that is uncommon.
- Low-tech friendly: no need for CO2 or technical substrate, it is very easy.
- Hardy: overwinters in our regions via its underground parts that resist frost.
- Propagation by stolons. It therefore spreads on the surface, making it a progressive and durable ground cover.
- Conservation of this species which has become threatened in the wild.
Planting and cultivation tips
- Light: medium to strong (avoid shading from taller or floating plants).
- Water: clear and stable. Avoid turbidity (clay in suspension).
- Substrate: sandy, rather low in limestone. Space the plants so they join together as they spread.
- Aquarium: bright foreground. Very little invasive and easy to control.
- Pond/bank: shallow area with clean sands. It tolerates being out of water during dry periods with possible flowering and seed production.
Possible uses of Marsh Littorella
- Low-tech aquarium: short foreground carpet, "European marsh" aesthetic.
- Pond and pool: gentle bank stabilization, perennial amphibious lawn.
- Educational pond: local plant, perfect for raising conservation awareness.
