Water milfoil: an oxygenating, cleaning, and decorative plant for natural aquariums and ponds
What is Water milfoil?
Water milfoil (Myriophyllum brasiliensis) is an aquatic plant with reddish stems covered with finely cut leaves forming a tender green lace (which can turn coppery red under strong light). It grows both planted and floating, anchors to the bottom with long filaments, and tolerates indoor and outdoor environments, from low-tech aquariums to ponds.
Why choose Water milfoil for a natural aquarium or pond?
- Powerful oxygenating action: submerged, it improves dissolved oxygen levels for fish and invertebrates.
- Natural filtration: submerged or emerged, it quickly absorbs nitrates and phosphates, slows algae. Ideal for low-tech.
- Refuge for fry: foliage and tangled stem network appreciated by fry and shy fish.
- Ultra-versatile: succeeds even without substrate, without CO₂, compatible with low-tech aquariums, ponds, and trashcan gardens.
- Unique aesthetic: creates a feathery "forest" underwater or a tender green canopy above water.
- Resistant: in a pond, it easily withstands goldfish and koi carp.
Care of Water milfoil
- ✂️ Fast growth: trim, pinch, or lay down the stems to control height and prevent them from thinning out.
- 🌡️ Temperature: 3 - 30 °C (perfectly survives winter in a pond).
- 💡 Light: moderate to strong. The coloration is redder with intense lighting.
- 🌱 Quick cutting: a fragment is enough to create a new plant.
- 🔗 Fixation: fix the stems in the sand or decor, or simply let them float; the plants will anchor themselves by their "root" filaments (false roots).
Tips for using Water milfoil well
- 🌿 Place it in the background or create a jungle of tangled stems.
- 🎨 Pair it with plants with broader leaves for visual contrast.
- 🔧 Use it as a living filter in tanks without pumps and in ponds.
- 🌞 Perfect in open tanks: the emerged stems, with their different leaves, create an airy herbarium of a beautiful tender green and slightly shade the entire tank.
- 🦐 Combine it with microfauna (water lice, planorbids...) for an active ecosystem.
Water milfoil FAQ in aquarium or pond
It can float freely or anchor itself by sending out "root" filaments toward the bottom.
Yes. It is content with proper lighting and regular pruning. No heating, filtration, or technical soil needed.
No. It absorbs nutrients only through its leaves and only anchors itself to resist the current.
Cut too long and bare stems, replant the tips to thicken the clump.
Absolutely; it tolerates temperature variations and overwinters outdoors.
