Water milfoil crisped (Myriophyllum crispatum): oxygenating and decorative plant for ponds

A graphic amphibious plant that “crawls, then shoots upward”

Crisped water milfoil thrives in ponds and pools: its stems crawl along the bottom, take root, then shoot up to the surface, forming highly decorative “miniature fir trees.” Underwater, its fine, feathery foliage oxygenates and purifies the water. Above the surface, its upright stems give structure and volume. Ideal for adding complexity to the ecosystem and providing safe shelter for microfauna, with water lice particularly fond of taking refuge in it.

Why choose crisped water milfoil?

  • Oxygenating and purifying: absorbs nitrates and phosphates, competing with algae through continuous growth.
  • Striking silhouette: a highly decorative “forest” of upright stems, similar to mare’s tail, but with a different texture and color.
  • Habitat for microfauna and fry (creeping stems and dense rootlets), which find shelter and food there.
  • Hardy: the emergent parts disappear in winter. Vigorous regrowth in spring.
  • Easy maintenance: simple to prune and propagate from cuttings; it is not very invasive.
  • Low-tech friendly in a large aquarium (but much more comfortable in a pond).

Planting and cultivation advice

  • Ponds and pools: plant in shallow water. Let the stems creep along the bottom and then emerge.
  • Light: medium to high (higher intensity promotes compact growth and vigor).
  • Water: clear, with moderate flow; suitable for natural tanks and bucket ponds.
  • Pruning: cut stems that are too long. Replant the segments, respecting their orientation.
  • Pairing: looks superb with mare’s tail (Hippuris vulgaris) for a contrast of color and texture, as their shapes are similar.
  • Winter: outdoors, the submerged stems become dormant. The base regrows even more vigorously in spring.
  • Soil: a substrate is appreciated, whether simple sand or clay; the plant will anchor itself in it.

Possible uses for crisped water milfoil

  • Natural pond / pool: decorative vegetation, oxygenation, purification, and protective plant cover.
  • Bucket pond: rapid growth during the season and attractive emergent stems.
  • Large low-tech aquarium: background group (ideal in an open tank).

FAQ - Crisped water milfoil

Is it effective against algae?

Yes: rapid growth and nutrient consumption create strong competition for algae.

Does it need CO2?

No, it is completely unnecessary. It grows very well without it, especially in a sunny pond.

How can it be propagated?

Simply by taking cuttings: cut a section of stem and replant it. The base will produce new stems, and the cutting will grow its own roots.

Could it take over the pond?

It can spread without becoming invasive; control it with one or two annual prunings and thin it out if necessary.

Does it survive the winter?

Yes. The emergent parts disappear, but the submerged stems and growing points overwinter and then regrow in spring.
