Hardy to approximately -30°C, it remains outdoors all year round and structures the landscape even in winter. The stems can rise 35 to 40 cm above the surface, and the plant establishes itself at depths of up to approximately 40 cm. It is an incredibly easy pond plant!

Water horsetail has regular whorls and a rich, sometimes bluish green color. Its emerged, fir-tree-like stems are highly distinctive. Curly water milfoil reddens easily and its stems are slightly less upright. However, the two plants resemble each other.
