Gathering: Create a simple aquarium
When observation and biodiversity advantageously replace technology, a gentle, fascinating, relaxing aquarium hobby... at last!
For several years now, Low-tech aquarium keeping has gained many followers, attracted by its simplicity and philosophy.
It is an aquarium practice that minimizes the use of technology, instead promoting natural balances.
Low-tech was born from the phenomenon of trashcan aquariums, which appeared in 2004 with an internet forum that has since become extremely popular.
Some experienced aquarists discovered at that time that their fish, placed outdoors in the summer in simple containers filled with water (often just plastic trashcans), were in better shape in the autumn than their counterparts kept in aquariums. This, of course, went against all the teachings found in aquarium literature at the time.
It was then realized that the filter was unnecessary for biological balance and that the stress fish suffer due to technical equipment—noise, artificial temperature homogenization, harsh lighting, etc.—was harmful.
In short, replacing technology with a true natural balance makes the fish more resilient and requires far less maintenance.
This type of aquarium that "runs by itself" nevertheless demands more observation... which is ultimately not unpleasant for its owner!
The absence of a filter and suction pump allows the safe introduction of all sorts of creatures that increase biodiversity, feed the fish, enrich the useful bacterial flora, and also complete the natural and calming spectacle that the aquarium provides.
Some even take the step of having an aquarium without fish, entirely dedicated to plants and abundant biodiversity. The absence of fish allows a very rich and fascinating micro-fauna to survive and develop.
From the fascinating water louse to the hopping daphnia, through the ostracods straight from prehistory, one can spend hours watching the silent and soothing ballet of aquatic life.
The hypnotic dance of the Blackworm, the comical poses of the bladder snail, the strange glossiphonia, and the discretion of the smallest snail one can find, all invite meditation.
Almost no maintenance, no daily feeding or motor noise, these trouble-free aquariums live their lives all on their own!
