Dao noï (Pogostemon helferi): an unusual carpeting aquarium plant
A compact, bright carpeting plant
Pogostemon helferi, nicknamed Dao noï in Thai ("little star"), forms curly rosettes close to the ground. Ideal for creating an unusual, bright light-green carpet in the foreground, it loves light and stays very short when it gets enough. Perfect for nano aquariums and for the shrimp that shelter there and graze on the biofilm and microalgae on its leaves. Water lice and fry move about safely under its cover
An amphibious plant, it also grows above water (in a paludarium or terrarium) and can even flower out of water.
Why choose Dao noï?
- Dense, low-growing carpet (3–5 cm) in strong light.
- Unique shape: curly rosettes create an uncommon "star" effect.
- Low-tech compatible: no CO₂ required if the light is strong and the water is clear.
- Easy to propagate by division and lateral spreading of the plants.
- Ideal for nano aquariums and shrimp (small size, shelter close to the ground).
- Adapts to emersed growth (paludarium) and summer cultivation outdoors.
Planting and care tips
- Plant in small clumps spaced a few cm apart so they can grow together.
- Strong light is essential to keep it low-growing (avoid overly dense floating plants that cast too much shade)
- Simple substrate (fine sand/gravel), soft to moderately hard water.
- CO₂ is optional: often used to speed up thickening, but not essential.
- Care: divide and replant the edge rosettes to extend the carpet.
- Outdoors: summer only (this plant is sensitive to cold). Protect it from herbivorous fish (carp, goldfish) that nibble its tender leaves.
Possible uses
- Low-tech aquarium: bright foreground.
- Nano aquarium: low-growing carpet, shelter for juveniles, ideal size.
- Paludarium / humid terrarium: emersed growth in a humid environment; may flower.
- Small summer pond or basin: shallow, bright areas out of reach of herbivorous fish.
FAQ - Dao noï (Pogostemon helferi)
No. It is optional: light is the key factor.
About 3 to 5 cm with sufficient light.
Strong light, clumps spaced apart at first, regular division, and limited shade.
Not enough light (or shade from other plants, often floating plants). Increase the lighting.
Yes, it's actually one of its best uses (shelter, grazing on biofilm).
Additional information
