Ceratophyllum for natural aquarium and pond: versatile oxygenating plant

Discover Hornwort, a floating and oxygenating plant perfect for the natural aquarium. Water purification, fast growth, algae control.

What is Hornwort?

The aquarium Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum), the famous "Hornwort" also called "cornifle," is an aquatic plant with very fine and serrated leaves, very popular in natural aquariums. It can be used floating or planted and is especially appreciated in low tech aquariums, floating frogbit tanks, and ponds.

Advantages of Ceratophyllum demersum in a natural aquarium

  • Intense oxygenation of the water
  • Effective algae control by absorbing excess nutrients ("nitrate pump")
  • Ideal natural refuge for fry and small fish
  • Very aesthetic thanks to its fine and light foliage
  • Compatible with floating frogbit tanks and filterless aquariums
  • Excellent resistance to high heat, ideal for summer tanks

How to care for Hornwort?

  • 🌿 Fast growth, requiring regular monitoring
  • 🌿 Without true roots, can float freely or be lightly anchored
  • 🌿 Prefers medium to strong light
  • 🌿 Tolerates a wide range of temperatures
  • 🌿 Remember to thin regularly to avoid excessive density

Our tips for using Hornwort

The Hornwort is a must-have for community aquariums, trash can aquariums, and ponds. Use it floating for quick purification or planted for a more structured decorative effect. It naturally pairs with duckweed or Azolla to utilize light or with floating frogbit for an aesthetic complement.

"Hornwort is an irreplaceable plant for oxygenating and purifying a natural aquarium without filtration." — Mattier

FAQ Ceratophyllum demersum in aquarium or pond

Can Hornwort be planted?

Yes, but it also grows very well floating freely. Having no true roots, it only feeds in the water. Planting it is just an aesthetic choice.

Is it suitable for an aquarium without a filter?

Perfectly, it oxygenates the water very efficiently using only light as energy. The current created by the filter or pump then becomes unnecessary.

Does Ceratophyllum need a substrate?

No, this plant grows without substrate, directly in the water. Even bare soil suits it!

Can it be mixed with floating plants?

Yes, especially with duckweed or floating frogbit for a nice visual harmony.

Is it invasive?

It can become so if the light is strong enough and nutrients (nitrates and others) are abundant. In this case, simply remove the excess. You thus remove nitrates from your aquarium, trash aquarium, or pond in plant form!
