True queen of the ponds, she can also live in an aquarium where she devours algae and waste.
The great pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis) is a snail found in our ponds, and can therefore live all year round in an outdoor pond, without ever suffering from winter.
In an aquarium, its tolerance goes up to 25°C but it does not appreciate heat beyond that.
A large consumer of algae, it is highly sought after in ponds for this reason, where it is very effective in limiting encroachment.
In the absence of algae, it is still able to fall back on plants, unlike its little cousin the bladder snail.
Its adult size of about 5 cm makes it a spectacular snail. Its pointed shape and dark brown color make it stunning.
Not protected by a lid, it can sometimes be attacked and even eaten by certain fish, although this does not happen often. In ponds, it can be on the menu of large fish, but its pointed shell generally remains a deterrent!
"Its presence in a pond can be a very good way to attract and retain its natural predators, which are the various amphibians: toads, frogs..."
"They will never completely eradicate it, because it is prolific."
The great pond snail breathes with one lung, and therefore regularly comes up to the surface to breathe. It is also often seen swimming upside down just below the surface, as it feeds on the bacteria that form a film there.
In short, if it finds plant waste (dead leaves or stems), bacteria (that cover all surfaces of the aquarium), and especially algae, it will generally spare the plants. In a pond, on the contrary, it will help limit the encroachment of overly exuberant plants, as soon as it has finished consuming the algae!
We ship young individuals, a few months old (8 to 10 mm) who will thus have plenty of time to adapt and grow in your aquarium or pond. Since reproduction is hermaphroditic, it only takes two individuals (any two) to ensure a large offspring.
