- 🛡️ Natural algae control: its very rapid growth avidly consumes nitrates and phosphates, depriving algae of resources.
- 🫧 Oxygenating: highly active photosynthesis, with visible pure-oxygen bubbles forming on the leaves under strong light!
- ✅ Easy and tolerant: the perfect plant for beginners, with no notable requirements regarding water, light, or temperature, and it does perfectly well without added CO2.
- 🌿 Dense, natural decoration: feathery foliage that dresses the background and provides hiding places for fry, shrimp, and microfauna. It forms a dense curtain without “gaps.”
Who is Limnophila suitable for?
- Beginners who want a simple, effective, attractive plant that grows successfully without making things complicated.
- Low-tech enthusiasts looking for intense biological activity to continuously purify their aquarium.
- Community tanks needing a dense, light-colored background that will highlight darker or reddish plant groups.
- Shrimp or fry tanks requiring a fine, reassuring refuge.
Tips for and uses of Limnophila sessiliflora
- Planting: in the background to create a light, dense curtain. Alternatively, in the midground as a clump rising among shorter plants.
- Lighting: medium to strong for vigorous growth and dense foliage.
- Substrate: ordinary sand is suitable. This plant feeds mainly from the water through its leaves and all its submerged tissues.
- Pruning/propagation: Cut a tall stem from time to time and replant it. The base will also regrow, making your planting denser. Regular pruning prevents the stems from becoming bare at the base. Limnophila can grow above the water if allowed to, but it generally does so only slightly, preferring to spread across the surface. Cutting and replanting allows the lower sections to receive good light again.
- Outdoors: possible only in summer, as it is sensitive to cold. It cannot overwinter in a pond, but it is quite oxygenating in summer, for example in a container pond.
FAQ - Limnophila sessiliflora
It is unnecessary. It grows perfectly well without CO2 in a natural tank. Adding CO2 may at most increase its density.
Limnophila sessiliflora is much less demanding, more tolerant, and easier to maintain, while offering a very similar light, feathery appearance.
5 cm per week is common, and sometimes even 10 cm per week under optimal conditions! Since it consumes nitrates and phosphates as quickly as it grows, algae have a hard time gaining a foothold!
As soon as it reaches the surface. Cut it then and replant the tops of the stems to keep the clump compact. The stem bases left in the soil will then receive light again and produce new stems themselves!
