Vallisneria: an elegant, oxygenating plant for natural aquariums
What is Vallisneria?
Vallisneria asiatica is an aquatic plant with long, ribbon-like leaves that rise from a root rosette to reach 30 to 50 cm under ordinary lighting, making it the perfect height for standard aquariums. Shorter and finer than the famous, massive V. gigantea (up to 2 m), it creates an elegant green curtain in the background or along the sides of the aquarium. Planted in a simple bed of sand, it thrives easily in low-tech aquariums, unfiltered outdoor tubs, or ponds, tolerates temperature fluctuations, and multiplies generously.
Why choose Vallisneria for your natural aquarium?
- Constant oxygenation: its photosynthetic ribbons release dissolved oxygen throughout the day when exposed to light.
- Passive filtration: rapid growth ⇒ absorbs nitrates and phosphorus, curbing algae through competition.
- Shelter and decoration: forms dense thickets where fish, shrimp, and fry can take refuge. Its swaying movement is very attractive in a current.
- Easy-care plant: tolerates hard or soft water and grows without added CO₂ or fertilizer beyond the natural waste from fish or invertebrates.
- Compatibility: ideal for low-tech aquariums or unfiltered tanks, as well as outdoor ponds that do not freeze over completely.
Vallisneria care
- 🌱 Planting: Slightly bury the roots in the sand. Recommended spacing: 3-4 cm between plants to let them multiply on their own.
- 💡 Light: medium to high; the more light it gets, the longer it grows and the more it multiplies. Outdoors in winter, it becomes shorter and darker.
- ✂️ Growth / pruning: Cut back sharply any parts that are too long and floating at the surface. Remove excess runners if desired to limit its spread.
- 🌿 Reproduction: lateral runners in “chains.” Remove the young plantlets to fill in other areas.
- 🌡️ Temperature: 10 - 30 °C. Overwinters outdoors if the base doesn't freeze.
Tips for using Vallisneria
- 🎨 Plant it in small clusters at the back to create a natural green curtain.
- 🌿 Pair it with floating plants (Azolla, floating frogbit) to provide light shade for the tank.
- 🐟 In community tanks, it serves as a visual barrier that reduces territorial stress.
- 🏠 In an outdoor tub, it cleans summer water and provides protective thickets for fry.
FAQ - Vallisneria in aquariums or ponds
It spreads quickly by runners; simply removing the young shoots by hand is enough to control it.
Ordinary sand or natural soil is sufficient; the plant feeds mainly through its leaves.
Asiatica (offered here, also called Vallisnera spiralis): leaf width under 1 cm, ideal aquarium height of 30-50 cm, light green. Gigantea, on the other hand, can reach 2 m long in a pond, with wider, darker leaves.
Yes. Its nutrient consumption purifies the water in low-tech tanks, which no filter can do.
Yes, cut the leaves that are too long to your desired length; the plant will quickly grow new ones.
