Vallisneria gigantea: a tall, easy plant for natural aquariums, outdoor tubs, and ponds
A spectacular, oxygenating, very tall plant
Vallisneria gigantea is the giant among Vallisnerias, with long ribbon-like leaves that quickly reach the surface. In an aquarium, it creates an elegant canopy. Outdoors, its ribbons can turn red in the sun and it may flower. Its rapid growth makes it an excellent oxygenating plant and a major consumer of nitrates and phosphates, ideal for balancing natural aquariums as well as ponds and outdoor tubs.
Why choose Vallisneria gigantea?
- A perfect plant curtain for the background or to hide certain areas.
- Rapid growth, resulting in strong oxygenation and water purification.
- Very easy to grow and suitable for low-tech aquariums (no CO₂ required).
- Tolerates hard water: grows well in tap water.
- Reproduces via runners, forming dense, long-lasting patches.
- Ribbon-like leaves that can turn red near the surface. May flower outdoors.
Planting and growing tips
- Placement: at the back and sides of the aquarium to create height and hide unsightly areas.
- Substrate: provide at least 5 cm of soil (sand or gravel) to anchor the plants.
- Light: medium to high. Trim ribbons that create too much shade (trimming also slows growth).
- Water parameters: medium to hard water; no special requirements. CO₂ is entirely unnecessary.
- Outdoors: a hardy plant that is sensitive to frost. It can overwinter only in a deep pond, where its roots will remain frost-free. Perfect for an outdoor tub in summer.
Possible uses
- Low-tech aquarium: a large background plant that stabilizes the ecosystem through its vigorous growth and long-lasting leaves, which provide a surface for biofilm and periphyton.
- Large aquariums and community tanks: striking vertical lines and shelter for shy fish.
- Outdoor tub (summer) / planted pond (if deep enough).
