Najas for Natural Aquarium: Fast and Easy Oxygenating Plant

The three-lobed duckweed is an oxygenating plant ideal for a natural aquarium. Fast, filtering, and easy to maintain, it offers a perfect refuge for shy fish and fry.

What is Najas?

The aquarium three-lobed duckweed (Najas guadalupensis) is an aquatic plant with thin, branched stems, free-floating or semi-attached, highly sought after in natural aquariophily. Thanks to its rapid growth, it consumes excess nutrients, thus purifying your water from nitrates among others. It is perfect for low tech aquariums and trash can aquariums, and even outdoor ponds.

Advantages of Najas in a natural aquarium

  • Oxygenation of water by photosynthesis in the water column
  • Natural algae control
  • Provides an ideal refuge for fry, shrimp, and small fish
  • Suitable for aquariums without filter, heater, or technical substrate
  • Requires no substrate as it is not planted: it feeds in the water
  • It grows in all directions and not just upwards, perfectly occupying the space

How to maintain Najas?

  • 🌿 Fast growth: monitor and regularly remove excess
  • 🌿 No substrate required, can grow floating between two waters (but submerged)
  • 🌿 Prefers medium to strong light, even shaded by floating plants
  • 🌿 Tolerates a wide range of temperatures. Our strain even withstands winter in outdoor ponds

Our tips for using Najas

Insert the received portion into your aquarium. Do not throw away the brown stems: they are not dead; on the contrary, they will produce new young green shoots. You can leave it in open water or weigh it down slightly with a stone. Be patient: it needs time to adapt to its new environment.

The najas pairs very well with the large duckweed, the three-lobed duckweed, or Ceratophyllum. It is perfect for community aquariums, killifish tanks, trash can aquariums, and even ponds (since our strain can stay there over winter). Its protective qualities with its fine, tangled stems make it an ideal choice for breeding tanks.

"The three-lobed duckweed is ideal for low tech tanks where it naturally oxygenates and purifies the water. Above all, it is an excellent refuge for fry." — Mattier

FAQ - Najas aquarium

Is Najas suitable for a filterless aquarium?

Yes, it is perfect for aquariums without filters. It oxygenates, cleans the water, with light as its only energy source.

Is it invasive?

It grows quickly, but simply removing the excess by hand controls its growth. It is simple and easy because its stems break easily.

Can it be planted or must it float?

Najas can float freely in open water or be slightly anchored in the substrate, according to your preferences. It will naturally emit white filaments towards the ground to anchor itself.

Is substrate needed for Najas?

No, it grows perfectly without substrate. It feeds only in the water through its stems and leaves. It does not have true roots.

Is Najas compatible with the poubellarium?

Yes, it is ideal for poubellariums thanks to its tolerance to temperature variations and minimal maintenance. It quickly occupies the volume without hindering fish passage.

What is the difference between Najas and Java Moss?

The two plants form aquatic jungles where fry find refuge. But Najas is looser, much less dense, and does not completely block fish passage.

Can Najas be used in an outdoor pond?

Yes, our strain perfectly withstands winter outdoors and coexists without problem with floating plants like duckweed or Azolla for example.
