Vallisneria: elegant and oxygenating natural aquarium plant
What is Vallisneria?
The Vallisneria asiatica is an aquatic plant with long ribbon-like leaves that rise from a root rosette to reach 30 to 50 cm under ordinary lighting, a perfect height for classic aquariums. Shorter and thinner than the famous and massive V. gigantea (up to 2 m), it forms an elegant plant curtain at the background or sides of the aquarium. Fixed in a simple sand bed, it easily thrives in low tech aquariums, floating frogbit, or ponds, while tolerating temperature variations and multiplying generously.
Why choose Vallisneria for your natural aquarium?
- Constant oxygenation: its photosynthetic ribbons release dissolved oxygen all day under the effect of light.
- Passive filtration: rapid growth ⇒ absorption of nitrates and phosphorus, slowing algae by competition effect.
- Refuge and decoration: forms dense clumps where fish, shrimp, and fry take refuge. Very aesthetic undulating movement in the presence of current.
- Easy plant: tolerates hard or soft water, grows without added CO₂ or fertilization other than natural waste from fish or invertebrates.
- Compatibility: ideal in low tech aquariums or tanks without filters, but also in outdoor ponds that do not freeze completely.
Care of Vallisneria
- 🌱 Planting: slightly embed the roots in the sand. Recommended spacing: 3-4 cm between plants to let them multiply on their own.
- 💡 Light: medium to strong; the more it is lit, the longer and more it multiplies. In winter outdoors, it becomes shorter and darker.
- ✂️ Growth / trimming: cut off parts that are too long floating on the surface cleanly. Remove excess stolons if desired to limit its expansion.
- 🌿 Reproduction: lateral stolons "in strings." Take young seedlings to densify other areas.
- 🌡️ Temperature: 10 - 30 °C. Overwinters outside if the base does not freeze.
Tips for using Vallisneria well
- 🎨 Plant it in small bunches at the bottom to create a natural green curtain.
- 🌿 Combine it with floating plants (Azolla, floating frogbit) to slightly shade the tank.
- 🐟 In community tanks, it serves as a visual barrier that reduces territorial stress.
- 🏠 In a floating frogbit, it cleans summer water and forms protective clusters for fry.
FAQ - Vallisneria in aquarium or pond
It spreads quickly by stolons; a simple manual removal of young shoots is enough to control it.
Ordinary natural sand or soil is sufficient; the plant mainly feeds through its leaves.
The asiatica (offered here, also called Vallisnera spiralis): leaf width less than 1 cm, ideal height 30-50 cm for aquarium, tender green. The gigantea, on the other hand, can reach 2 m long in ponds with wider and darker leaves.
Yes. Its nutrient consumption purifies the water in low tech tanks, which no filter would do.
Yes, cut the leaves that are too long at the desired level; the plant regenerates quickly.
