Gathering: The Official Guide to Natural Aquariums

You were waiting for it!

The first official guide by Mattier, inventor of the poubellarium
and natural aquaristics. To discover, understand, and learn the principles of a new practice in aquaristics that challenges conventional ideas.

2 hours of complete guide!

Introduction

The origins: already 20 years!

Discover the revolutionary experience that, in 2004, changed everything and reshuffled the cards of aquarium dogmas, finally told by the one who originated it.

Chapter 1

Aquarium keeping, what is it for?

Do not confuse the various currents of aquaristics and learn to recognize each one. After strong initial resistance, natural aquaristics has largely earned its place in a world still largely dominated by technology enthusiasts.

Chapter 2

Choosing Your Aquarium

Learn how to choose the right aquarium based on real criteria.
Discoveries in natural aquaristics teach us that not all aquariums are equal. What are the important criteria and which ones can be overlooked or even avoided?

Chapter 3

Choosing your flooring

Know how to avoid the pitfalls and excessive claims of the trade!
The aquarium trade is passionate about technical substrates. But what lessons can be learned from the natural approach? A return to the real functions of an aquarium substrate, away from preconceived ideas and marketing.

Chapter 4

Too much technology!

Rediscover the simplicity and silence of an aquarium.
Among the many devices described as essential, even vital, by the aquarium trade and manuals, Mattier invites us to take a step back and reconsider everything: which functions really require technology?

Chapter 5

Water at the heart of the reflection…

Finally understand, simply, how to recognize "good" water and make it "habitable."
Of course, water is at the heart of the approach. But not in the traditional and conventional way. An overview of the subject in light of current knowledge. Get ready to completely change your perspective!

Chapter 6

Plants as key players

Change your perspective on plants, rediscover them.
In trying to support or even replace them, technology has sometimes done them a disservice. Yet, they have powers that no technology possesses. Mattier helps us rediscover them. Life is back, at last!

Chapter 7

Snails: the strong link?

Don’t look at snails as mere curiosities anymore.
Aquatic snails have a unique power that no other category of animals possesses in an aquarium. They are a unique link in the ecosystem you will build.

Chapter 8

Fish or no fish?

Discover a new and surprising perspective, supported by observations in a natural environment.
Mattier raises a fundamental but taboo question and explains its scientific and theoretical background. With this provocative question, he invites us to decipher the true principles that govern an aquarium and its stability.

Chapter 9

Bugs, bugs, and more bugs!

Step into the mysterious and fascinating world of "critters," as Mattier calls them!
Beyond snails, a multitude of aquatic invertebrates exist. What role do they play in nature and in aquariums? Dive into the most little-known world of aquarium enthusiasts.

Chapter 10

Help, the algae!

Learn how to fight algae smartly.
Fighting algae without understanding them, treating them as the "weeds" of the aquarium, only leads to a war, usually chemical, that is worse than the problem. What lessons can the natural approach teach us about this central issue?

Chapter 11

The filter, a misconception?

Be among the first to understand the true foundation of natural aquaristics.
This is one of the questions that founded natural aquaristics. Mattier invites us to free ourselves from dogmas and prejudices and to ask the real question: what does the filter do that would not be done without it?

Chapter 12

Designing ecosystems!

Change your perspective! This is why natural aquaristics is so exciting: it encourages us to stop seeing the aquarium as a machine to plug in, which discourages us with each failure, and instead to view it as a true ecosystem, fascinating and ever-changing. But to do this, you have to learn to let go!

Who is Mattier?

Mattier is the inventor of the poubellarium in 2004 and has been an aquarist for 45 years. He has been working for over 20 years to change the approach to aquaristics in light of scientific developments, promoting an ecosystem-based approach rather than a technological one.

He was the first to theorize the biological uselessness of filters and to prioritize animal welfare in an activity that cared little about it.

Why this "Official Guide"?

Mattier had never before spoken out to present his approach and thoughts, which until now had been scattered across numerous but fragmented writings.

He finally speaks up to establish the foundations of a more natural practice of aquaristics and to bring coherence to what now clearly appears as a comprehensive reflection.

This work will help establish principles that are often repeated, distorted, or incompletely understood.

What language does Mattier speak?

The Guide is currently in French. Its translation is under consideration.

How long does the whole thing last?

2 very intensive hours, divided into an overview as an introduction and 12 chapters organized around the main aspects of an aquarium.

It is recommended to follow each chapter carefully (as the content is dense), then perhaps wait a few days before moving on to the next.

Mattier demonstrates pedagogy and uses simple language, but the challenges to some generally accepted ideas require a bit of time to absorb.

I am an experienced aquarist. Will I learn anything new?

Yes, very certainly.

Mattier practiced traditional aquaristics for a long time, but his approach is fundamentally different today.

Questioning principles that were once considered established, absolute truths, or even dogmas often set by the aquarium trade are new elements that are even more exciting to discover when you already have a solid foundation and an open, curious mind.

How is natural aquaristics different?

Traditional aquaristics relies on complex and expensive technology and equipment, and the instability of aquariums with this approach discourages many enthusiasts.

In natural aquaristics, most of these devices are replaced by complete and robust natural cycles.

You spend less time repairing, cleaning, sealing, connecting… and more time marveling and learning!
