Egeria Najas: ultra-fast-growing oxygenating plant

Egeria najas is a little-known relative of elodea (Egeria densa), but even more robust and vigorous. It grows at an impressive rate, capturing nitrates and phosphates and thus strongly limiting algae growth by starving it. It also has a specific action against cyanobacteria thanks to its natural antibiotic molecules with an antibacterial effect.

Versatile and resilient, it adapts to many conditions: soft or hard water, variable pH, low or intense light, herbivorous fish, snails... It oxygenates the water abundantly (you can even see it “bubbling”!), thereby contributing to the overall health of the ecosystem.

An extremely effective natural purifying and anti-algae plant, perfect for ponds, aquariums, and low-tech outdoor containers.

Why choose Egeria najas?

  • 🚀 Express growth: up to several centimeters per day!
  • 🛡️ Excellent natural purification and effective control of algae and cyanobacteria
  • ⚖️ Tolerant of a wide range of water parameters
  • 🌸 Suitable for ponds, outdoor containers, and low-tech aquariums where it will readily flower
  • 🐠 Very resistant to herbivorous fish and snails
  • ⚓ Can be used freely submerged mid-water or planted in the substrate

Planting and care tips

  • Can be planted in plain sand or left to float freely between the surface and bottom
  • Easily propagated by cuttings: cut a stem and replant it
  • Likes light but also tolerates less brightly lit areas
  • Strongly oxygenates the water, often visible through its photosynthesis bubbles
  • Regularly remove a few stems to prevent it from becoming too invasive

FAQ - Egeria najas in aquariums & ponds

What is its adult size?

Up to 60 cm, depending on the space and conditions. Some stems may grow longer but then break easily to form two stems.

Can it be planted in sandy substrate?

Yes, it adapts perfectly to plain sand since the substrate is only used to anchor it. It feeds exclusively from the water.

Does it flower?

Yes, its flowers are very similar to those of elodea: right at the surface, with a few crumpled ivory-white petals resembling tissue paper!

Can it coexist with goldfish?

Yes, even the hungriest herbivorous fish cannot get through its resistant leaves! Goldfish prefer duckweed.

Is it suitable for outdoor winter conditions?

Yes, it withstands the cold but stops growing during the cold season. It starts growing again in spring, a little later than elodea.
