Three-lobed duckweed for natural aquarium: rare and ecological floating plant
What is the Three-lobed duckweed?
The Three-lobed duckweed (Lemna trisulca) is a small floating plant close to classic duckweed but slightly submerged below the surface. This position allows it to release oxygen into the water and not into the air, making it valuable for a low tech aquarium or a poubellarium.
Advantages of the Three-lobed duckweed in a natural aquarium
- ✅ Nitrate filtration: helps limit algae proliferation.
- ✅ Natural non-occluding shading that soothes fish and fry by gently filtering the light.
- ✅ Less invasive than classic duckweed, its growth is moderate.
- ✅ Safe refuge for fry and microfauna among its overlapping leaves. It allows them to safely access the surface and consume the infusoria that abound between its leaves.
- ✅ Compatible with unfiltered aquariums and low tech tanks.
- ✅ Tolerates a wide range of temperature and water quality. It easily survives winter outdoors in ponds and resists frost.
- ✅ Original aesthetic thanks to its three-lobed leaves of a darker green.
- ✅ Its rare submerged floating position allows it to oxygenate the water.
How to care for the Three-lobed duckweed?
- 🌱 Moderate growth: remove excess as needed, but this is rarely necessary.
- 🪨 No substrate needed, strictly floating plant.
- ☀️ Moderate light. This is why it is often found in nature associated with duckweed, which somewhat protects it from direct sunlight.
- 🏊 Supports the poubellarium and outdoor wintering, even in ponds.
- ✂️ Easily harvested thanks to its thin mats. Each fragment forms a new plant.
Tips for using the Three-lobed duckweed
Start with small clumps: they will spread slowly without suffocating the surface. Ideal for:
- 🏠 Nano aquariums or breeding tanks (shading).
- 🐠 Low tech community aquariums.
- 🌿 Combinations with duckweed or floating frogbit to vary heights.
- 🐟 Precious for Betta owners, as it is an ideal support for their bubble nests. It will also produce infusoria upon hatching.
Quote from Mattier:
“The three-lobed duckweed is the ideal alternative for those who want the filtering power of duckweed with oxygenation power.”
FAQ Three-lobed duckweed
Its growth is very reasonable; occasional harvesting is enough to control it.
Yes; it even helps stabilize parameters in a low tech tank. It is a refuge and support for microfauna and microbiota, essential in natural aquaristics.
It grows more slowly, remains submerged (and thus oxygenates the water) and has three-lobed duckweed leaves of a beautiful darker green.
No. Entirely floating plant feeding in the water through its leaves.
Perfectly, it withstands external temperature variations well and provides subtle shading.
