Water milfoil: an oxygenating, cleansing, and decorative plant for natural aquariums and ponds
What is Water milfoil?
Water milfoil "Red Stem" (Myriophyllum rubricaule) is an aquatic plant with reddish stems covered in finely divided leaves that form a delicate light-green lacework (which can turn copper-red under strong lighting). It grows equally well planted or floating, anchors itself to the bottom with long filaments, and thrives both indoors and outdoors, from low-tech aquariums to ponds.
Why choose Water milfoil for a natural aquarium or pond?
- Powerful oxygenating action: when submerged, it improves dissolved oxygen levels for fish and invertebrates.
- Natural filtration: whether submerged or emerged, it quickly absorbs nitrates and phosphates and slows algae growth. Ideal for low-tech setups.
- Fry refuge: its foliage and network of tangled stems are appreciated by fry and shy fish.
- Ultra-versatile: thrives even without substrate or CO₂; suitable for low-tech aquariums, ponds, and outdoor tub setups.
- Unique aesthetics: creates a feathery "forest" underwater or a light-green canopy above the water.
- Hardy: in ponds, it easily withstands goldfish and koi carp
Water milfoil care
- ✂️ Fast growth: trim, pinch, or lay down the stems to control their height and prevent them from becoming bare.
- 🌡️ Temperature: 3 - 30 °C (it survives winter outdoors in ponds perfectly well).
- 💡 Light: moderate to high. The coloration becomes redder under intense lighting.
- 🌱 Fast propagation: a single fragment is enough to create a new plant.
- 🔗 Securing: secure the stems in sand or among decorations, or simply let them float; the plants will anchor themselves through their filament-like “rootlets” (false roots).
Tips for using Water milfoil effectively
- 🌿 Place it in the background or create a jungle of tangled stems.
- 🎨 Pair it with broad-leaved plants for visual contrast.
- 🔧 Use it as a living filter in tanks without pumps and in ponds.
- 🌞 Perfect for open tanks: the emerged stems, with their different leaves, create an airy herbarium in a beautiful light green and provide slight shade for the entire tank.
- 🦐 Combine it with microfauna (water lice, planorbids...) for an active ecosystem.
Water milfoil FAQ for aquariums and ponds
It can float freely or anchor itself by sending “rootlets” toward the bottom.
Yes. It only needs adequate lighting and regular trimming. No heater, filtration, or technical substrate is necessary.
No. It absorbs nutrients through its leaves alone and anchors itself only to withstand the current.
Cut off stems that are too long and bare, and replant the tips to thicken the clump.
Absolutely; it tolerates temperature fluctuations and overwinters outdoors.
